Energy emergency declared as San Antonio’s usage hits record levels

The state’s power grid regulator called an energy emergency for the first time in five years yesterday afternoon as Texans turned up the air conditioning to escape the summer heat.

San Antonio and other parts of the state regulated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas saw record energy usage Monday afternoon. And although usage for Tuesday wasn’t as high, reserves fell below 2,300 megawatts, forcing the council to signal a level one energy emergency alert from 3:10 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
