Hawaiian Electric takes another step toward cheaper, greener energy

Hawaiian Electric Cos. is planning to issue a round of requests for proposals for its second phase of renewable energy.

With the impending closure of the coal burning AES Hawaii power plant on Oahu in 2022 and the upcoming retirement of Maui’s oil-fired plant by 2024, Hawaiian Electric is seeking to replace fossil fuel energy with renewable resources. Solar and wind generation, updated grids and new storage methods are the key to that plan, the company said.
