Independence explores $70M purchase of refurbished gas turbines

The city of Independence is exploring its options to maintain or expand its energy-generating capacity.

As one of the area’s only municipal governments operating its own utility, the city through Independence Power & Light needs to maintain enough electric capacity to satisfy its customer demand as well a feed into the Southwest Power Pool, which is a Little Rock, Arkansas-based organization that controls the power grid for more than a dozen states, including Missouri and Kansas.
