Lights out: Thousands awaken in darkness as PG&E blackout hits South Bay, Santa Cruz

Thousands of South Bay residents awoke without power Thursday morning as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. continued an unprecedented and deliberate blackout billed as a wildfire prevention measure.

The utility turned off power to parts of San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties late Wednesday, following an earlier blackout phase that took effect early Wednesday morning in parts of the North Bay and East Bay.
