SMUD selects veteran executive and engineer as its next CEO

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District has chosen Paul Lau, a 38-year veteran of the organization, to become the utility’s next CEO and general manager.

Lau will succeed longtime CEO Arlen Orchard, who has led the utility since 2014 and is retiring.

Lau originally joined the utility in 1982 when he was an undergraduate electrical engineering student at California State University Sacramento. After he graduated in 1984, he joined SMUD permanently as an assistant engineer.
