Texas spent millions closing abandoned wells during recent fiscal year

The Railroad Commission of Texas shuttered 1,700 abandoned oil and gas wells over the past year, up from 1,300 over the same period last year, the Railroad Commission reported Friday.

The number of wells plugged exceeds the goal of 979 set by the Texas Legislature for fiscal 2019, according to a statement released by the Railroad Commission, whose fiscal year runs from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31.
