WEC Energy ending coal use, will shift newer Oak Creek units to natural gas by 2035

Three months after WEC Energy Group Inc. executives said they were exploring the feasibility of adding natural gas capabilities at the company’s newer Oak Creek coal-fired plants, the company announced a plan to eliminate coal as an energy source by 2035.

A preliminary estimate for the expense involved in transitioning the Oak Creek “Power the Future” units is about $180 million, WEC Energy senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Scott Lauber told analysts Tuesday.
