Duke Energy rate-hike hearing to end Friday as coal-ash costs still in dispute

A large part of the rate hike Duke is seeking involves the $490 million the company says it has spent to excavate or otherwise properly dispose of coal ash in 2018 and 2019. The Public Staff, charged with representing the interests of utility customers, says Duke should not be allowed to recover all those costs.
