Fire at SMUD Downtown substation knocks out power in central business district

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s Downtown substation at Sixth and H streets caught fire just before noon Tuesday, knocking out power to Downtown and snarling traffic as streetlights went dark.

Power was still out Tuesday evening as SMUD crews worked to find the cause of the fire and to reenergize the station.
