HECO issues new warning about ‘elaborate’ scams

Hawaiian Electric Co. is warning customers of a rise in “elaborate” money-stealing scams including a new trend that involves unwitting real estate agents.

People purporting to be from HECO have called the real estate agents claiming a listing will have its power shut off immediately unless a payment is made, and gives them a fraudulent phone number for the homeowner to call. In at least one case, an agent passed the number on to their client.
