What’s next for bankrupt PES refinery? Friday’s auction could decide site’s fate

The future of the 1,300-acre site by the Delaware River, currently occupied by the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery, could be decided Friday behind closed doors in New York.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July, a month after a catastrophic fire and explosion destroyed part of the refinery’s capacity. The refinery shut its operations right after the fire, laying off nearly 1,000 employees.

The refinery complex has been in the midst of a sale process since November. By then,…

Ag operation wins approval to develop solar array in Yolo County

The Putah Creek Land Co., a farming operation in Yolo County, plans to install its second commercial solar array near Winters as a way to diversify its income.

The photovoltaic panels and a battery storage system will occupy around 19 acres of a 31-acre property that is currently a walnut orchard, said Dan Martinez with Putah Creek Land Co.

“The power produced by these panels will be used locally. It might go right into Winters,” Martinez said.

$650 million Xcel plan for Mankato power plant wins support from Minnesota PUC

Minnesota state regulators on Thursday approved a plan by Xcel Energy Inc. to buy a natural gas power plant in Mankato, currently owned by Southern Power, for $650 million.

The Star Tribune reports on the unanimous vote by the state Public Utilities Commission, which came after Minneapolis-based Xcel (NYSE: XEL) restructured the deal so that the company’s shareholders — not ratepayers — will bear the risk of the purchase. The PUC previously opposed Xcel’s plan, and the state’s attorney general…

Share madness: These are the best and worst stock performers of 2019

It would be an understatement to say that pharmaceutical company Novavax Inc. did not have a great 2019.

The Gaithersburg company saw its ResVax vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus fall short in yet another late-stage clinical trial — its second such miss in three years — causing its stock price to plummet and, at one point, earning it a delisting threat from Nasdaq. The Food and Drug Administration proceeded to order up another late-stage clinical trial before it would consider ResVax,…

Local shipping company vows to sue city of Richmond for banning coal

A local terminal operator said it will sue Richmond after the city banned the storage of coal earlier this week.

Richmond City Council voted Tuesday to prohibit the storage and handling of coal and petroleum coke — a byproduct of oil refining — within the city limits. The new ordinance gives businesses three years to phase out coal and petroleum coke (petcoke).

The legislation targets a port operated by Levin-Richmond Terminal Corp. (LRTC), which last year loaded almost 1 million metric tons…

The Redmond-based company will also remove all the carbon it has emitted directly or by electrical consumption since its founding in 1975, and it committed to investing $1 billion over four years in technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

“Our most important contribution will come not just from our actions, but from how we empower our customers…
